Thoughts from Your Session |
|
Dear friends in Christ,
Pastor Kim will be joining us for worship next Sunday (November 1) and begins preaching the following Sunday. We are so excited to meet her in person and lift her and furry companion, Champ, up in prayer as they are working their way to the Pacific Northwest.
Help Us to Welcome Pastor Kim
Do you have a favorite dentist, dog park, or local attraction to recommend? Please forward any suggestions you have to Kara (admin@standrewspdx.com) or bring it with you to church on Sunday. We will provide index cards to capture the congregation's top secret best places in Portland, to help Kim settle in and feel welcome. Shoe repair? Karaoke bar? Favorite farmer's markets? It is all fair game if it is a local favorite of yours!
Thank you to everyone who has submitted a suggestion card or contacted Kara already. It's not too late to contribute your ideas! (Deadline for submission is Sunday, October 25, so that Kara will have time to format everyone's suggestions into a little booklet that we'll present to Pastor Kim on November 1).
We hope you will be able to attend the November 1 service and stay for a special meet 'n greet with Pastor Kim during our Fellowship Coffee Hour following service.
In Christ,
St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Session

SUNDAY LIVE STREAM IS BACK!
We have been able to resume live streaming our Sunday worship services to our Facebook page. The easiest way to find our page is to search Facebook for StAndrewsPDX. This avoids ending up at the the page for St. A's Presbyterian Church somewhere else in the country.
A HUGE thanks goes out to Steve Planck for tirelessly working to resolve our tech issues with Meta and get everyone using the church's usual page (thanks also to you all for bearing with us and deferring to the backup account/page while this all happened).
Please note: Each Sunday's service will be available to watch for a month after it's posted. |

The following is a message from the Presbytery, sent out this past Friday (October 16).
So many of us were enjoying a beautiful and warm Pacific Northwest fall day when the news broke of the tragedy in Bend on Thursday. Our collective hearts sank as we watched the details emerge from Silver Rail Elementary School. Here at the Presbytery, phone calls and text messages started pouring in from around the region and across the country as with words of prayer and consolation as we attempted to connect with our leaders in the area. As a presbytery, we share minister members and lay leaders in the Bend/Redmond/Sunriver region who not only serve in congregations, but also as staff at St. Charles Medical Center, which heroically moved into triage mode to both save lives and console others.
Pastor Steven Koski is the Lead Pastor from First Presbyterian Church of Bend, and earlier today (Friday) he sent out these words and prayer for both his congregation and for the wider community. We want to share those words with you as well and ask that we continue to lift up our dear friends and siblings in the Bend region to be touched and filled by the Spirit in the midst of their broken hearts.
Dear friends,
Our hearts are heavy with the news from Silver Rail. Some losses leave a wound that does not close, and no words can reach that place. We will not try to rush past it. This Sunday, as we gather for worship, we will hold space for our shared grief, our questions, and our love for the families who are hurting. Moments like this are exactly when we need one another, so please come, just as you are, and let us be community together.
A Prayer for Silver Rail:
God of all comfort,
We come to you with broken hearts,
and we know they will stay broken.
Three children of our community are gone,
children who went to school expecting a normal day,
whose names were spoken by teachers this week,
whose backpacks still hang by doors at home.
There are no words that can reach the place where this grief lives, so we bring you our silence and our tears.
We hold before you the families whose lives have been torn open and changed forever.
Be near to the parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends in the hours when the house is too quiet and the questions are too loud.
Hold what they cannot carry.
We pray for the children of Silver Rail who saw what no child
should see,
for teachers and staff who protected and comforted them,
for first responders who ran toward danger,
and for the doctors, nurses, and counselors now tending wounds of body and spirit.
Give them strength, rest, and people to lean on.
We confess that we are angry and afraid.
We do not understand how this keeps happening, and we will not pretend it is acceptable.
Let our grief not harden into despair.
Let it move us toward one another and toward the work of making our children safe.
Jesus, you took the children in your arms and blessed them.
We trust that these little ones are held in that same embrace,
and we ask you to hold us too, because we are not okay.
Help us be the church this week and in the weeks to come showing up for one another grieving with those who grieve without hurrying toward comfort.
Let no one in our community feel alone in this.
And in our grief, help us trust what we cannot yet feel: that nothing in all creation, not death, not violence, not the deepest sorrow, can separate us or these children from your love in Christ Jesus. Death and tragedy will not have the last word.
Love will.
Hold us in that promise until we can hold it ourselves.
In the name of Christ, whose love is stronger than death,
Amen.
With you in grief and in hope,
Pastor Steven

NEW PASTOR GIFT
Though Pastor Kim is accustomed to moving frequently and adapting to her surroundings fairly quickly, we thought it would be fun to provide her a guide to the area, including recommendations of some of the congregation’s favorite, go-to places and service providers to help her settle in faster. |
|
|
|
|
If you need some ideas to get started, we've provided a list here -- but feel free to add anything and everything to provide her with the full PNW experience through a local's eyes.
- SW Portland recommendations (healthcare resources, service
providers, favorite shops, etc.)
- Dog life in PDX (dog parks, pet stores, veterinary care resources, trails to hike with a dog, special animal-friendly events, etc.)
- Foodie recommendations (places to go “for the best ___,” favorite
menu items, must-visit places where famous chefs are featured, lists of restaurants by type of cuisine, etc.)
As noted in the message from Session above, you can bring your suggestions to church on Sunday, write something on the cards provided during the coffee hour, or email Kara to include your local go-to spots in the printed guide we'll gift to Pastor Kim on November 1. Please have all responses submitted no later than Sunday, October 25.
Champ and Pastor Kim will surely appreciate any suggestions you offer and we can't wait to hear what adventures they have together here in the PNW.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
(A call for volunteers from the Presbytery)
Next January, Cascades Presbytery will host the Annual Event of The Association of Partners in Christian Education (APCE). Several hundred Christian Educators from the US and Canada will gather at Portland’s Waterfront Marriott Hotel for three days of fellowship and learning.
Rev. Joyce Emery and Elder Roberta Schlechter, CCE, co-chair the Local Welcome Team. They are joined by Rev. Amy Delaney, Rev. Carolyn Hampton, HR, Susan Young Thornton (Covenant Network of Presbyterians), and Elders Kay Hope Gold and Vickie Forrester of East Woods-Vancouver. The Welcome Team is hard at work arranging meaningful excursions, creative introductions to the history and culture of the Pacific Northwest, and a table decor to reflect that story.
During the event, the team will help attendees find their way around the hotel and assist with logistics, among other tasks. This is a large, important event, and we seek interested people to come and help us ensure that every APCE attendee experiences the very best of Northwest hospitality. Interested helpers may reach out to Pastor Joyce at emery.joyce@gmail.com or Roberta at rrschlechter@gmail.com.

SUPPORTING MSRV
Our friends at the Multnomah Safe Rest Village (MSRV) always enjoy when volunteers drop off items for FMSRV Sandwich Mondays. If you'd like to participate, you'll make (or you can buy/bring!) a dozen of an item of your choosing and ideally:
- Can be consumed without utensils (e.g., sandwiches, wraps, burritos).
- Has a protein and/or vegetable included.
- Is easy to chew.
Check the Sign Up to see what others have volunteered to bring (if they've noted they're bringing a certain type of sandwich, you could take another volunteer slot and bring something either to complement that item or sign up to bring something that will provide residents with a choice for their meal).
This community also needs folks advocating for their needs as well as shedding light on the need for real solutions to end homelessness.

SOUTHWEST OUTREACH
Southwest Outreach is an active civic group connecting with our neighbors living outside in SW Portland through visits, conversation, and relationship-building through a variety of programs and services.
Check out this YouTube video to see how programs like SW Outreach's weekly shower program at Village Grace Church (where guests get a shower, a hot meal, and a chance to connect with resources and engage in conversation) bless so many in need.
Volunteers are always needed as are material items (e.g., phones, tablets, laptops, and portable WiFi hotspots). of SW Outreach. You can also financially support SW Outreach (of which St. Andrew's is the fiscal sponsor) by donating online — select 'SW Outreach' in the drop-down menu when noting your designation. To get involved, please email Marilyn Palumbo.
If you see (or know of) someone living outside in our area and you are uncertain how or whether to approach, you can always contact Southwest Outreach for a team to visit them. Call Marilyn to coordinate (971.235.5788). |
