Thoughts from Your Session

Dear friends in Christ,

This week, we enjoyed time with one another at a potluck that celebrated the abundance of the harvest and of love for one another. And we rejoiced in the news that Session has called the Rev. Dr. Kim Jackson as our Transitional Pastor. Her first Sunday with us will be November 1.

More information and a "Get to Know Your New Pastor" event is in the works and will be shared with you soon, but in case you missed what we shared last Thursday, here's a little background on Pastor Kim:

Assisting churches large, medium, and small in discerning their future path is part of her calling. Since her parents were in the foreign service, she is accustomed to moving around. She is looking forward to living in our part of the country, which she has never done. Along with ministry, she is an artist and is proficient with technology. You can view her blog seven different ways at https://jacksonvisualmedia.blogspot.com/.

While we eagerly anticipate her arrival in a month's time, we continue to focus on ways in which we can help our kindred in Christ across the globe. Please read the article below about our important work in Cuba, written by Mission Elder, Marilyn Palumbo. And we're gearing up to receive and dedicate our next Special Offering on Sunday, October 4 -- the World Communion Offering -- which members of your Mission Team spoke about during last Sunday's service. This Special Offering supports ministries focused on racial justice, gender justice, peacemaking, global witness, and ecumenical and interfaith relations.

Through our gifts, we participate in God’s work of reconciliation around the corner and around the globe. In our divided and hurting world, this Offering reminds us that Christ’s table is open to all people and that we are called to build communities shaped by compassion, justice, peace, and hope -- something our world desperately needs right now.

Our generosity will go a long way as the PC(USA), alongside global partners, addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing our communities and world. Together, we work to foster understanding across differences, accompany communities impacted by violence and injustice, strengthen relationships across cultures and faith traditions and bear witness to the reconciling love we know in Jesus Christ.

This is why we are inviting each member of our community to give generously to the World Communion Offering. We give because reconciliation is not simply an idea; it is central to our calling as the Church. Every act of compassion, justice and peace becomes part of God’s healing work in the world.

As Presbyterians, we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord of all Creation and seek to follow him in lives marked by compassion, kindness and grace. And through our giving, may we joyfully share Christ’s reconciling love with all those we care for, love and serve.

In Christ,

News & Notes
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT
Thanks to the many who came forward with “ Cash for Cuba” donations last Sunday. God’s gifts have been so generous as to  double the funds that St. Andrew’s will bring next week to our sister church in Santa Clara.

What a joyful culmination of this Season of Peace, that our gifts of support and love will be delivered in person at the Cuban  Encuentro, where kindred in Christ from the US and Cuba will be gathered on World Communion Sunday! For over 15 years, St. Andrew’s has stood in solidarity with our Cuban sisters and brothers, recognizing our connections and lifting one another up in times of challenge and celebration. The profound joy of coming to the Table on World Communion Sunday sings out with hope for our communities.

The reality of solidarity is an ever-present gift of being in Cuba. We genuinely look around the table to see who is there, and we think about who is not there (and why), and we continue to discern together on this. When we listen to one another's stories, we are listening to the World; when we support one another’s hopes, we are supporting the World; and when we advocate for one another, we are advocating for the World.

In all of these ways, we stand in solidarity to discern God’s work for us. Whether in Cuba or in the US, may St. Andrew’s continue to echo Christ’s universal call of welcome to the Table of God’s World.

In peace,
Marilyn Palumbo, Mission Elder

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
We recently shared some news with you about our ongoing support of Neighborhood House. Pictured below, several of our members (John Calhoun, Stewardship Elder; Carolyn Gazeley, Personnel Elder; Marilyn Palumbo, Mission Elder; and Amy Houchen, Worship Elder) met with Neighborhood House Executive Director Chris Chiacchierini and staff to present a check to further programs of delivering food, resources, and services to neighbors and communities in Portland.
Hannah Lee, Director of Development at Neighborhood House, expressed the following in response to St. Andrew's ongoing support:

"Your support throughout the year provides meaningful support to our community, helping us ensure that our neighbors have access to healthy food, housing stability, education programming, and other essential services that provide holistic support for all of our neighbors.

I want to thank you again for all the ways you've supported Neighborhood House and for continuing to stand with us in the work to alleviate poverty. We depend on the generous support of neighbors, like YOU, to achieve our mission. We are grateful for your generosity and hope you take great pride in the important difference that your gift makes!"

  • notice how community is formed through hopeful, embodied worship and singing that supports the participation of all

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The Presbytery put out the following call for volunteers in its weekly newsletter this morning:

Next January, Cascades Presbytery will host the Annual Event of The Association of Partners in Christian Education (APCE). Several hundred Christian Educators from the US and Canada will gather at Portland’s Waterfront Marriott Hotel for three days of fellowship and learning.

Rev. Joyce Emery and Elder Roberta Schlechter, CCE, co-chair the Local Welcome Team. They are joined by Rev. Amy Delaney, Rev. Carolyn Hampton, HR, Susan Young Thornton (Covenant Network of Presbyterians), and Elders Kay Hope Gold and Vickie Forrester of East Woods-Vancouver. The Welcome Team is hard at work arranging meaningful excursions, creative introductions to the history and culture of the Pacific Northwest, and a table decor to reflect that story.

During the event, the team will help attendees find their way around the hotel and assist with logistics, among other tasks. This is a large, important event, and we seek interested people to come and help us ensure that every APCE attendee experiences the very best of Northwest hospitality.  Interested helpers may reach out to Pastor Joyce at  emery.joyce@gmail.com or Roberta at rrschlechter@gmail.com.

ST. ANDREW'S QUILTERS
2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 9:30am

The St. A's Quilters work year-round to create some beautiful items that are donated to organizations that provide warmth to those in need. Whether you're a novice or have some sewing/quilting experience, we hope you will join us. All are welcome!

This group meets twice a month in the quilting room. We hope you'll stop in and join the fun! Please contact Gail Planck  for more information.
SUPPORTING MSRV

Our friends at the Multnomah Safe Rest Village (MSRV) always enjoy when volunteers drop off items for FMSRV Sandwich Mondays. If you'd like to participate, you'll make a dozen of an item of your choosing and ideally:

  • Can be consumed without utensils (e.g., sandwiches, wraps, burritos).
  • Has a protein and/or vegetable included.
  • Is easy to chew.

Check the Sign Up to see what others have volunteered to bring (if they've noted they're bringing a certain type of sandwich, you could take another volunteer slot and bring something either to complement that item or sign up to bring something that will provide residents with a choice for their meal).

This community also needs folks advocating for their needs as well as shedding light on the need for real solutions to end homelessness.

For more information about these activities or other ways in which you can get involved to help our at-risk, unhoused neighbors, text Robin at 503-703-7183. And please visit the Friends of Multnomah Safe Rest Village website, and join their Facebook group for updates, news, photos, and connections.
SOUTHWEST OUTREACH
Southwest Outreach is an active civic group connecting with our neighbors living outside in SW Portland through visits, conversation, and relationship-building through a variety of programs and services.

Check out this YouTube video to see how programs like SW Outreach's weekly shower program at Village Grace Church (where guests get a shower, a hot meal, and a chance to connect with resources and engage in conversation) bless so many in need.

Volunteers are always needed as are material items (e.g., phones, tablets, laptops, and portable WiFi hotspots).  of SW Outreach. You can also financially support SW Outreach (of which St. Andrew's is the fiscal sponsor) by donating online — select 'SW Outreach' in the drop-down menu when noting your designation. To get involved, please email Marilyn Palumbo.

If you see (or know of) someone living outside in our area and you are uncertain how or whether to approach, you can always contact Southwest Outreach for a team to visit them. Call Marilyn to coordinate (971.235.5788).

ST. ANDREW'S NAME TAGS

As part of our welcome and when passing the peace, name tags help put names with faces - a crucial part of fellowship! Stop by the tower by the sanctuary doors in the narthex and grab your name tag and wear it during worship. (Don't forget to return it there after service so you'll have it next week too!)
If you don't see yours, or need a new one, ask one of our welcome team members on Sundays or contact the office during the week and we will be happy to make you a name tag for future use.
ACCESSIBLE (ADA) PARKING
Please remember that street parking along SW Sunset is reserved for picking up and dropping off those who need extra assistance for worship on Sundays.

Additional parking spaces are plentiful in our lot across Dosch. Please contact the office if you have any questions or need elevator access.
