Thoughts from Your Session

Dear friends in Christ,

As the warm days of summer begin to draw to a close, we look back with gratitude for the moments of rest, renewal, and fellowship we shared. We pray that as everyone returns from vacations and travels, our Lord grants you safe journeys home and a smooth transition into the upcoming season.

At this time, we have no reports from Session to share with you, but they are hard at work on many important tasks behind the scenes which have been recently reported over the last few weeks.

We look forward to gathering with you this Sunday. And we invite you to attend the next Family Fellowship gathering at noon (following service and fellowship hour), downstairs in Calvin Hall. This week's theme is  "What Does Love Look Like?". Guests are welcome, but please RSVP to Roberta for planning purposes.

Speaking of what Love looks like, the Presbytery shared a beautiful message from the Elders of Warm Springs Presbyterian Church on Facebook. You truly embodied Love in your response to their call for assistance after the recent Bench Fire.

In Christ,

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Session

News & Notes

COME JOIN US!

We hope you'll join us after service this Sunday, August 16, to see what this monthly gathering of family and friends of all ages is all about! This time around, we'll be discussing what Love looks like with an activity even the grown-ups will enjoy doing.

Family Fellowship (formerly called "Supper Church") is an all-ages, family-focused service (with meal provided). Children in attendance will hear a Bible story and then take part in a craft that mirrors the lesson. And adults get a chance to socialize with one another and enjoy this time of fellowship while the kiddos do their thing. Guests are always welcome!

We will meet downstairs (in Calvin Hall) after service and fellowship hour has concluded. If you would like to join us, please contact Roberta Schlechter, Elder of Christian Formation, to RSVP.

The Presbytery has put out a call to action for a few tasks that some of you may be interested in lending your time and talents to. If you'd like more information, please contact Kara and she'll put you in touch with the person at POTC for each item.

✍️ Thank-You Note Writers Needed!

Do you genuinely enjoy putting pen to paper and making people feel appreciated? Have you been told you have the gift in the ministry of thank-you notes? We need your help to share our gratitude to the hundreds of people who have generously donated to the Warm Springs relief efforts.

💻 Calling All Tech Gurus!

We're seeking individuals with IT know-how to help several of our churches. Are you looking for a worthwhile project to lend your technical talents to in your free time? Or maybe you know (or are) a retired IT wizard, livestream expert, audio engineer, or AV volunteer looking for a worthwhile project? From designing a great livestream setup to improving sanctuary sound systems -- we have a few needs to meet and would love your help.

The annual Multnomah Safe Rest Village's Summer BBQ is happening next Thursday, August 20!

The Friends of Multnomah SRV are still looking for folks to make and/or bring dishes (plenty of desserts already but the picnic-style meats and side salads could use a few more volunteer slots filled too feed the 100 attendees) and beverages (sparkling/flavored water). Sign up to help feed our neighbors in need at the SRV today!

This summer celebration provides a comforting and hearty BBQ feast for the participants and staff at our Safe Rest Village and is greatly appreciated by all. The Urban Alchemy staff and volunteers will handle the grilling, but we need other items (meats, veggies, fruit, bread, desserts, and drinks) to round out the meal.

You may drop off your food items between 11:30am-12:00pm on Thursday, August 20 in the MSRV parking lot.

MEN'S BIBLE STUDY
Please join us in this virtual Men’s Bible Study on Zoom on Wednesday, August 19 at 7:00am.

Can't make it for this next study session? Not to worry! This group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month using this same Zoom link. Contact Larry Kelley  for more information.
Connected In Christ
In this section, you will find information about events published by the Presbytery of the Cascades, local churches, and like-minded groups who uphold the vision, values, and mission of St. Andrew's. By supporting those beyond our walls, we show that the Connectional Church helps us achieve more together than we ever could alone.
COVENANT CONVERSATIONS: CASCADES
Saturday, August 29, 10am - 3:30pm
Westminster Presbyterian Church

The Covenant Network of Presbyterians invites you to look more closely — at scripture, at the stories around us, and at ourselves — and to grow in our ability to recognize the image of God in all God's people. The tentative schedule includes worship, conversation, and the following key agenda items:

"When Did We See You?" (Plenary panel discussion)

Moderated by the Rev. Brian Ellison, the morning plenary features Michele DeClue and the Rev. Katherine Pater sharing their perspectives on recognizing God's image in all people today.

From Seeing to Action: Being Called to Love in a New Way

(workshop with Eunice Ingermanson)

This workshop will explore the journey of two shy retirees who went from very conservative beliefs about the LGBTQ+ community becoming fierce affirming advocates and organizing a bridge for reconciliation, education, and support between the Christian and LGBTQ+ communities in Southwest Washington. If they could do it, so can you!

Steering the Ship Through Choppy Waters: How Church Leaders Navigate Difficult Conversations

(workshop with Susan Young Thornton)

Best practices and practical tools for guiding difficult conversations will be offered with particular emphasis on the fraught discussions that we might encounter in congregations, in Session and Presbytery meetings, and in community organizations. Participants will consider several case studies and think together about what kind of response best suits each situation.

Registration is $25 and includes lunch. (Discount codes are available for groups and for those in financial need or current students.)

REGISTER TODAY to join the conversation!

ST. ANDREW'S QUILTERS
2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 9:30am

The St. A's Quilters work year-round to create some beautiful items that are donated to organizations that provide warmth to those in need. Whether you're a novice or have some sewing/quilting experience, we hope you will join us. All are welcome!

This group meets twice a month in the quilting room. We hope you'll stop in and join the fun! Please contact Gail Planck  for more information.
SUPPORTING MSRV

Our friends at the Multnomah Safe Rest Village (MSRV) always enjoy when volunteers drop off items for FMSRV Sandwich Mondays. If you'd like to participate, you'll make a dozen of an item of your choosing and ideally:

  • Can be consumed without utensils (e.g., sandwiches, wraps, burritos).
  • Has a protein and/or vegetable included.
  • Is easy to chew.

Check the Sign Up to see what others have volunteered to bring (if they've noted they're bringing a certain type of sandwich, you could take another volunteer slot and bring something either to complement that item or sign up to bring something that will provide residents with a choice for their meal).

This community also needs folks advocating for their needs as well as shedding light on the need for real solutions to end homelessness.

For more information about these activities or other ways in which you can get involved to help our at-risk, unhoused neighbors, text Robin at 503-703-7183. And please visit the Friends of Multnomah Safe Rest Village website, and join their Facebook group for updates, news, photos, and connections.
SOUTHWEST OUTREACH
Southwest Outreach is an active civic group connecting with our neighbors living outside in SW Portland through visits, conversation, and relationship-building through a variety of programs and services.

Check out this YouTube video to see how programs like SW Outreach's weekly shower program at Village Grace Church (where guests get a shower, a hot meal, and a chance to connect with resources and engage in conversation) bless so many in need.

Volunteers are always needed as are material items (e.g., phones, tablets, laptops, and portable WiFi hotspots).  of SW Outreach. You can also financially support SW Outreach (of which St. Andrew's is the fiscal sponsor) by donating online — select 'SW Outreach' in the drop-down menu when noting your designation. To get involved, please email Marilyn Palumbo.

If you see (or know of) someone living outside in our area and you are uncertain how or whether to approach, you can always contact Southwest Outreach for a team to visit them. Call Marilyn to coordinate (971.235.5788).

ST. ANDREW'S NAME TAGS

As part of our welcome and when passing the peace, name tags help put names with faces - a crucial part of fellowship! Stop by the tower by the sanctuary doors in the narthex and grab your name tag and wear it during worship. (Don't forget to return it there after service so you'll have it next week too!)
If you don't see yours, ask one of our welcome team members if we already have an updated one on handIf you're new, you've misplaced your name tag, or we missed creating a tag for you when we recently made all new ones for everyone, please contact the office  and we will be happy to make you a name tag for future use.
DISABLED STREET PARKING ACCESS
Please note that the street parking along SW Sunset is reserved for picking up and dropping off those who need extra assistance getting inside for worship on Sundays. We ask that you please leave these spaces open and not park there. There is plentiful parking in our lot across Dosch.

Those needing assistance can also use the driveway on Dosch for dropping off and picking up, and take the elevator up to the main level. If you have any questions or need further assistance on Sundays please contact the office.
FLOWERS FOR SUNDAY WORSHIP
If you would like to recognize a special occasion or person (e.g., birthdays, anniversaries) or memorialize a loved one by placing flowers on the chancel, please contact Bev Ruggles to confirm a date.

(Contact the office for Bev's phone number if you don't have it.)
