Dear friends in Christ,
We wish to express a big thank you from Gwen Wildfong’s family (and Pastor Amy) to all who assisted on Saturday to make the celebration of Gwen’s life possible. From setup crew to ushers and other volunteers throughout the morning’s service, you were all fabulous and made this a wonderful experience for all in attendance.
This week’s message from members of Session comes from Steve Planck, who has given us the following tech update regarding our ongoing struggles with having virtual access to each week’s services. We are so grateful for and appreciative of Steve’s talents and time as he continues to work on addressing this matter.
Live Streaming Sunday Worship Services
For reasons that AI won't tell us, Facebook still will not allow us to live stream to our Facebook page. We know that you may want to revisit a sermon after Sunday has come and gone or send a service to a friend or loved one to view.

Dear brothers and sisters in faith: When I served on the St. Andrew’s staff (1990s-2009), I was encouraged and financially supported as I worked my way through the extensive PC(USA) Certified Christian Educator training. Now, as Elder of Christian Formation, I’d like to share a bit of what I’ve learned, with a brief message each month.
This month introduces a new subject: KING DAVID in the
New Testament. He looms large

|
|
against Goliath. He brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and wanted to build a suitable home for it. He composed a third of the Psalms expressly for worship. For being “fearfully and wonderfully made,” David gives God praise. God tells the Prophet Samuel that this shepherd boy is “A man after my own heart.”
A thousand years later, God gifted the world with God incarnate, our Lord, Jesus. A sinless man who saves the world from sin. The God of the Already and the Not Yet was at work and doing something new. But the New Testament makes clear that God’s promises to, and about King David, are very much part of the Church’s faith life even today. St Augustine wrote, “The New [testament] is in the Old concealed; the Old [testament] is in the New revealed.”
Scholar Michael Hardt of The Bible Center identifies
nine different themes that embed King David in the New Testament. Here they are:
- The SON of David, The THRONE of David, The HOUSE of David,
- The FAITHFUL MERCIES, The TABERNACLE, The SEED of David, and,
- The KEY, The ROOT and The OFFSPRING of David.
Let’s walk through each of these. They invite us to use our holy imagination, as we welcome King David himself into the Gospel.

NOTE: Family Fellowship has been postponed by a week.
We hope you'll stop in next Sunday, August 16, to see what this monthly gathering is all about.
This is an all-ages, family-focused service (with meal provided). Children in attendance will hear a Bible story and then take part in a craft that mirrors the lesson. And adults get a chance to socialize with one another and enjoy this time of fellowship while the kiddos do their thing. Guests are always welcome!

WARM SPRINGS IS FEELING YOUR LOVE!
A special message from the Presbytery this week:
First, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has so generously supported our Warm Springs Fire Relief efforts. Your response has been overwhelming, and it's a beautiful reminder of what it means to be the Connectional Church.
Thanks to your generosity, our first relief check was mailed this week, bringing your love and support directly to the Warm Springs community. At present, $15,520 has been received for Warm Springs Fire Response. These gifts will allow our Warm Springs leaders to identify supplies and address needs that we know will arise in the months to come, long after the short-term relief has run out.
We also want to extend our deepest appreciation to the many "boots on the ground in Warm Springs" who are working tirelessly in the community—meeting immediate needs now and preparing for the long road of recovery ahead.
But in the meantime... hold on just a minute! As we've continued to listen and discern the best way to help, our plans have shifted a bit.
We've learned that the needs extend well beyond baby supplies. Families are also in need of cleaning supplies and other essential household items as they begin the difficult work of returning to and restoring their homes.
Here's an updated list of ways to help:

Monetary Donations: At this point, financial gifts are the most helpful response. Funds will be distributed weekly to the appropriate local leaders and organizations for immediate and emerging community needs. (Click here to donate directly through the Presbytery.)

Additional Community Relief: We also encourage you to connect with Central Oregon Peacekeepers, who are providing boots-on-the-ground support throughout the community. Recovery is just beginning, and we know additional needs will emerge in the weeks and months ahead. We'll continue to keep you informed as opportunities arise to support our friends and siblings in Warm Springs.

Sally Kabat is seeking donations of acrylic yarn for doll-sized blankets she knits (that accompany dolls that Carol Stanfield makes), which are then donated to local children. Perhaps you have some yarn leftover from your own projects? Sally will pick up any yarn donations after Sunday's worship service. We're only a few short weeks away from the annual Multnomah Safe Rest Village's Summer BBQ!
The Friends of Multnomah SRV are still looking for folks to make and/or bring dishes (plenty of desserts already but the picnic-style meats and side salads could use a few more volunteer slots filled too feed the 100 attendees) and beverages (sparkling/flavored water). Sign up to help feed our neighbors in need at the SRV today!
This summer celebration provides a comforting and hearty BBQ feast for the participants and staff at our Safe Rest Village and is greatly appreciated by all. The Urban Alchemy staff and volunteers will handle the grilling, but we need other items (meats, veggies, fruit, bread, desserts, and drinks) to round out the meal.
You may drop off your food items between 11:30am-12:00pm on Thursday, August 20 in the MSRV parking lot. |

COVENANT CONVERSATIONS: CASCADES

Confident in God’s hopeful future and grateful for the ever-widening welcome of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Covenant Network of Presbyterians seeks an equity still not fully realized for LGBTQIA+ people in church and society.
Covenant Conversation: Cascades is an invitation to look more closely — at scripture, at the stories around us, and at ourselves — and to grow in our ability to recognize the image of God in all God's people.
Through worship, conversation, and a range of workshops, we'll explore what the Bible and our faith tradition have to say about inclusion, support church leaders navigating hard conversations, and ask together what it means to be faithful witnesses in a time when LGBTQIA+ rights and dignity are under real pressure. Whether you're just beginning this journey or have been walking it for years, you belong in this conversation.

ST. ANDREW'S QUILTERS
2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 9:30am
The St. A's Quilters work year-round to create some beautiful items that are donated to organizations that provide warmth to those in need. Whether you're a novice or have some sewing/quilting experience, we hope you will join us. All are welcome!

SUPPORTING MSRV
Our friends at the Multnomah Safe Rest Village (MSRV) always enjoy when volunteers drop off items for FMSRV Sandwich Mondays. If you'd like to participate, you'll make a dozen of an item of your choosing and ideally:
- Can be consumed without utensils (e.g., sandwiches, wraps, burritos).
- Has a protein and/or vegetable included.
- Is easy to chew.
Check the Sign Up to see what others have volunteered to bring (if they've noted they're bringing a certain type of sandwich, you could take another volunteer slot and bring something either to complement that item or sign up to bring something that will provide residents with a choice for their meal).
This community also needs folks advocating for their needs as well as shedding light on the need for real solutions to end homelessness.

SOUTHWEST OUTREACH
Southwest Outreach is an active civic group connecting with our neighbors living outside in SW Portland through visits, conversation, and relationship-building through a variety of programs and services.
Check out this YouTube video to see how programs like SW Outreach's weekly shower program at Village Grace Church (where guests get a shower, a hot meal, and a chance to connect with resources and engage in conversation) bless so many in need.
Volunteers are always needed as are material items (e.g., phones, tablets, laptops, and portable WiFi hotspots). of SW Outreach. You can also financially support SW Outreach (of which St. Andrew's is the fiscal sponsor) by donating online — select 'SW Outreach' in the drop-down menu when noting your designation. As part of our welcome and when passing the peace, name tags help put names with faces - a crucial part of fellowship! Stop by the tower by the sanctuary doors in the narthex and grab your name tag and wear it during worship. (Don't forget to return it there after service so you'll have it next week too!)

DISABLED STREET PARKING ACCESS
Please note that the street parking along SW Sunset is reserved for picking up and dropping off those who need extra assistance getting inside for worship on Sundays. We ask that you please leave these spaces open and not park there. There is plentiful parking in our lot across Dosch.
Those needing assistance can also use the driveway on Dosch for dropping off and picking up, and take the elevator up to the main level. If you have any questions or need further assistance on Sundays please contact the office. |

People experiencing a mental health crisis have a way to reach out for help in the U.S., by calling or texting the numbers 9-8-8. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. It will function much like 9-1-1, but is solely dedicated to addressing mental health needs. Click here for more information on this potentially lifesaving program, and help spread the word. |
