Dear friends in Christ,
Already in my short time as your Bridge Pastor, I have felt welcomed, prayed for, and encouraged in this ministry. Last Sunday’s celebration of Pastor Sarah was a wonderful tribute to her nine years as your pastor. It is clear that we will all be grieving in large and small ways the ending of Pastor Sarah’s time among us. Please hold her and her family in your prayers as they move through the various transitions her new call entails.
Lent began on Ash Wednesday, February 18th. It is the season of the church year in which we prepare to celebrate Easter. We do so by first recognizing our own sinfulness, our own frailty, our own dependence upon God. And alongside this, like two sides of the same coin, we celebrate God’s invitation to ALL to join in the feast Christ has prepared. The latter scripture we used as our focal point, during the three-congregation Ash Wednesday service led by Pastor Susan Tindall and held in our chapel. This Sunday’s sermon will be given by the Rev. Robin Garvin, a retired pastor who serves the Presbytery in a part-time role supporting congregations in transition.
My work as your Bridge Pastor also began this week. A Bridge Pastor shepherds the congregation and Session through that short period of time between the departure of the former pastor and the arrival of the next pastoral leader. Along with assistance from the Presbytery, I will be guiding the Session’s discernment of the skills and gifts they foresee being most helpful in their next pastor. That process will lead to a job description, posting, and interviews. It is usual that this process takes 2-3 months, so my initial contract with you is from February 16th through May 17th. The contract can be ended early if the next pastoral leader is available to start sooner than May 18th. It can also be extended, with the permission of all parties (Session, Bridge Pastor, and Presbytery.)
Another thing to know about bridge pastors is that we are usually no more than half- time. My contract is for half-time. That means that I will be preaching half the Sundays, though assisting in worship on most of the other Sundays. The Session and I have set expectations regarding the items that Pastor Sarah routinely did as Pastor. We now have a list that shows what items will be covered by me, what will be covered with the assistance of others, and what few things will be set aside until the next pastoral leader arrives.
Starting in March, you can find me in the church office on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. I will be working from home on Thursdays. Feel free to contact me through the phone number in the church directory, by email, or through the church office. I am available for pastoral care, but this is one of those items that I am sharing with others. The Deacons and Pastor Emeritus Patty Campbell-Schmitt will also be assisting. Please contact me to arrange for pastoral care.
With prayers for the needs of the congregation and the world,
Pastor Amy

Our Lenten image shows a maze in the foreground with a cross seen through fog in the distance, reflecting that our Lenten journey will not be a straight and simple march to the cross. Each week, this image will change, showing a different vantage point (as though we've entered into the maze and are working our way towards the cross).
In our readings from John’s gospel, we’ll encounter Jesus opening the eyes of his friends and disciples to who he is and what he is calling them to do, and then the cowardice of Peter’s denial of Jesus and of Pilate’s giving in to the crowd’s call for crucifixion.
We invite you to consider your own faith journey and what Lent means to you as we come to the cross together over the next few weeks.

St. Andrew's families (7 of them!) answered the call and have opened their homes to host small group meals and conversation as part of our "Dine to Donate" campaign to raise funds for our Cuban siblings.
We are asking for a donation of at least $50 per guest who attends. We are thrilled with the response we've gotten and are excited to hear how these mission-focused conversations go as we look to the future to reschedule our Cuba mission trip.
We still have room for one couple (or two individuals) on March 7! If you would like to snag those spots, please contact the office and Kara can put your name(s) down.
Our team has reached out to those who have signed up to let them know of a few scheduling changes (combining some dates to boost greater attendance -- and more robust conversation). If you need to confirm which date/time you're scheduled for, you can contact Kara.

UPDATE: ST. A'S ROSE GARDEN
The spring pruning is finished and the roses appear in top shape!
There is new growth in the garden and the first rose to bloom is likely to be Sunsprite -- we should be seeing that happen in late May. Sunsprite, a bright yellow bush rose, can be found behind Charlie's bench.
Our resident gardener, Mike House, has applied a pre-emergent product (Preen) for weed control. The product looks similar to fertilizer. Rose fertilizer is applied in June and August. Mike's rose manager, Phil Edmunds, has completed a proposal for a watering system. Mr. Edmunds and his crew will apply fungicide every three weeks with product rotation.
This month, you can expect to see three new bushes (David Austin Roses) in the garden behind the concrete bench near the slope. The new rose we'll be enjoying is called Scarborough Fair and is pink and white in appearance.

WINTER IS HERE. TEMPS ARE DROPPING. PEOPLE ARE COLD.
Winter is upon us in Portland and for our unhoused neighbors, the cold increases their needs tenfold. While Multnomah County activates severe weather shelters when temperatures are forecasted to be 25°F or below (or 32°F with driving rain/wind), many will face dangerous conditions today as temperatures hover just above these emergency thresholds.
With many year-round shelters remaining at capacity and additional emergency beds only opening during specific "severe" windows, our community members are often left without a designated day space or overnight warming center during "regular" freezing weather.
If you have anything that can help our neighbors who are living rough day-to-day (warm clothing, boots, winter outerwear, hand warmers, hygiene products, tents, tarps, sleeping bags), please consider donating your items to keep this community safe and warm during the cold winter months. |

ZIPLOC MINISTRY
First Saturday of the Month
10:30am-12:00pm - Ziploc bag filling and donation drop-off
Each month, St. Andrew's sends large Ziploc bags filled with essential items to distribute to those in our community who have found themselves without a home. Thanks to generous donors, along with additional Neighborhood Ministries funds, we receive enough funding each month to cover these costs. We are grateful to be able to continue this important work.
So what can you do to help? It has been brought to our attention the constant need for donations of new socks and new men's boxer-briefs, for many of our ministry partners. These can be dropped off at our March 7th Ziploc bag filling, at worship on Sundays, or during office hours.

LEND A HAND TO MSRV
St. Andrew's supports the Multnomah Safe Rest Village (MSRV) in partnership with the Friends of Multnomah Safe Rest Village. Under the ownership of Urban Alchemy, our unhoused neighbors are provided clean hygiene facilities and offered healthy meals, through an approach that supports guests’ physical and mental health, as well as by empowerment and skill training.
How can you help?
- Sign up to make and drop off sandwiches (and easy-to-chew snacks, if you're so inclined) for FMSRV Sandwich Mondays.
- Drop off donations of food, gently used clothing, new hygiene items, and pet food.
- Get involved! Opportunities are available to serve meals, assist with art projects, and engage with the community by Tabling at Hillsdale Farmers Market.
- Visit the Friends of Multnomah Safe Rest Village website, and join their Facebook group for updates, news, photos, and connections.

SOUTHWEST OUTREACH
Southwest Outreach is an active civic group connecting with our neighbors living outside in SW Portland through visits, conversation, and relationship-building through a variety of programs and services.
If you see (or know of) someone living outside in our area and you are uncertain how or whether to approach, you can always contact Southwest Outreach for a team to visit them. Call Marilyn Palumbo at 971-235-5788.
Shower Program
Now located at Village Grace Church, this weekly SW Outreach shower program is a welcome day center for people being displaced in our area. Our guests find a few peaceful hours to get a shower and a hot meal, connect with resources, and engage in conversation.
Request for Electronic Devices
Many of our neighbors who live outside desperately need electronic devices: phones, tablets, laptops, and portable WiFi hotspots. This connects them to the world of housing, medical care, employment, emergency services and other resources. If you have a device in any condition that is usable or can be repaired, please contact Marilyn Palumbo. The device should be reset to factory status from the settings menu. We’ll help with that if needed! Thank you.
Volunteer Opportunities
If you are interested in volunteering with this important and effective group, contact Marilyn Palumbo. You can also contact them if you’re worried about someone in the neighborhood who might be houseless and needing help. St. Andrew's is the fiscal sponsor of SW Outreach.
