Thoughts from Pastor Sarah |
|
Dear Kindred in Christ,
Thanks to all who contributed to or participated in our celebration of Katy's ministry last Sunday, and to those who have stopped in this week to express your appreciation. The day this eNews goes out is Katy's last day with us. She has done a beautiful job training her replacement, Kara Errico (pronounced Eric-Oh), who will hopefully be in worship with us this weekend with her family (husband Jake, daughter Jossy). Here's a picture of Kara so you know for whom to look.
Kara starts her full hours with us next Monday. She'll be maintaining the office hours Katy kept, 8:30-2:30.
We started our journey with the prophet Jeremiah last Sunday and will stay with him until the end of August. You'll get to hear three sermons from me (July 27, August 3 and 31) , one from Roberta Schlechter (August 10) and one from Sunggu Yang (August 17). And one week (August 24) we're having a half hour morning prayer service to free up time for our story-sharing event which is the next phase in our consulting process; that week Jeremiah will speak for himself! I've been doing a lot of reading on Jeremiah this week and appreciate Walter Brueggeman's (a famous and prolific biblical scholar who recently died) framing of the book as a dwelling in Holy Saturday. He draws a parallel between The Collapse of Israel and Good Friday, and the Return from Exile and Easter. But the Exile... that is parallel to the Saturday when all seemed lost. And even, I think, the time of crumbling in which Jeremiah started his ministry had some of this character.
There are many ways in which we are living in a Saturday world. So much has been lost-- particularly perhaps for those of us in the mainline Protestant Church. For a good stretch of American history American Protestants occupied a position of immense privilege and prominence. So many of us have unwieldy buildings because of the speed at which expansion was happening, particularly in the mid- twentieth century. Some of you remember when the Sunday School was filled with hundreds of children. I have never known a time such as this. The decline of mainline protestant churches started around the time I was born. Many are mourning particular people lost to death or disconnection. There is likely still some grief about the loss of staff and surely of programs. This is not to say that we are not a vibrant and living church, we are. But we are a church that has lost a lot. And the layers of loss ripple out in our deeply broken world. We have faith that new life, restoration will come. But we're in the dark day of waiting and grieving and sitting with loss.
We learn from Jeremiah to lament. And we learn from Jeremiah of the real freedom we have even in relationship to a powerful God. This week he teaches us this through the image of a potter and his/her clay on a wheel.
I hope you'll join us on Sunday to learn from Jeremiah, to receive the bread of life and the cup of salvation, to celebrate the graduations of two Schiefelbeins, and to meet Kara and her family. Sunday at 10am.
We are very aware that music sound has been deeply problematic on Zoom this summer. Steve Planck is working diligently to try to improve this. We've made progress, but know it is a moving target. Thank you for your patience.
Finally, today is Ollie Young's birthday! Tomorrow, I will host an in person coffee chat so that we can celebrate the gift of his life. Join us at Driftwood Coffee on SW Vermont (near St. Luke Lutheran, parking in front and back) between 10 and 12 Friday morning. I'm hoping Sally and Caroline might be willing to join us and tell us about their Triennium experience. They come home today. Please pray for traveling mercies.
Blessings, Pastor Sarah |

MULTNOMAH SAFE REST VILLAGE NEWS
Here is an update from the Friends of Multnomah Safe Rest Village:
We welcome Urban Alchemy as the new Operator of the Multnomah Safe Rest Village. As we have said, the mission of Friends of Multnomah Safe Rest Village will not change: to support Participants and staff, however we can. We have had a very positive meeting with Urban Alchemy leaders, and they have assured us that our relationship with the Safe Rest Village will continue. Though we will miss the positive relationships and good people we’ve worked with on the Sunstone Staff, we’re excited about moving forward into new connections. They have introduced us to new terminology: The residents of the Village, termed “Participants” by Sunstone Way, are now “Guests.” UA staff are “Practitioners.” Click here to read more about their history and approach on their website.
FMSRV Sandwich Mondays are back online, and we need lots of volunteers to make healthful sandwiches and drop them off at the gate: Click here to sign up! You can add a few other snacks and cookies if you wish, but it's not required. Remember, some guests have few or no teeth (sad to say, this is a common result of being homeless), so make sure you include some things that are easy to chew.
We will continue to keep you updated with new information as it comes to us!

ZIPLOC MINISTRY
Saturday, August 2
10:30-12:00-Ziploc bag filling and donation drop-off
Each month St. Andrew's sends large Ziploc bags filled with essential items to our ministry partner Operation Nightwatch, who then distributes them to the houseless people who utilize their services. Thanks to generous donors, along with additional Neighborhood Ministries funds, we receive enough funding each month to cover these costs. We are grateful to be able to continue this important work.
So what can you do to help? It has been brought to our attention the constant need for donations of new socks and new men's boxer-briefs, for many of our ministry partners. These can be dropped off at our first Saturday Ziploc bag filling, at worship on Sundays, or during office hours.

SERVING OUR NEIGHBORS AT WEST WOMEN'S & CHILDREN'S SHELTER
We prepare and deliver monthly, homemade casseroles and other food items to this domestic violence shelter. Recipes and instructions are provided. Casseroles are dropped off at St. A’s during the first Saturday Ziploc event. We always need more volunteers who love to cook. If you’d like to share in serving our neighbors at WWCS, check out the link here.

SOUTHWEST OUTREACH SHOWER PROGRAM
Southwest Outreach is an active civic group connecting with our neighbors living outside in SW Portland through visits, conversation, relationship-building, and a weekly shower program at Riversgate Church in Multnomah Village. The weekly shower program is a welcome day center for people being displaced in our area. Our guests find a few peaceful hours to get a shower and a hot meal, connect with resources and engage in conversation.
Request for electronic devices: Many of our neighbors who live outside desperately need electronic devices: phones, tablets, laptops, portable WiFi hotspots. This connects them to the world of housing, medical care, employment, emergency services and other resources. If you have a device in any condition that is usable or can be repaired, please contact Marilyn Palumbo. The device should be reset to factory status from the settings menu. We’ll help with that if needed! Thank you.
If you are interested in volunteering with this important and effective group, contact Marilyn Palumbo. You can also contact them if you’re worried about someone in the neighborhood who might be houseless and needing help. St. Andrew's is the fiscal sponsor of SW Outreach. You can make money donations through our website, choosing 'SW Outreach' in the drop-down menu. |

NATIONAL SUICIDE & CRISIS LIFELINE
People experiencing a mental health crisis have a way to reach out for help in the U.S., by calling or texting the numbers 9-8-8.
