Thoughts from Pastor Sarah |

Dear Kindred in Christ,
WEAR RED ON SUNDAY! I forgot to announce that last week, so wanted to put it up top in the eNews. It's fantastic when the fellowship looks fiery on Pentecost Sunday. This is my 9th Pentecost with you. The first was my very first Sunday as your pastor. The fifth was our first hybrid service in the sanctuary in the midst of the pandemic. It definitely feels like a mile marker. This Sunday will also be our second semi-annual congregational meeting of the year, during the hour of worship. We are thrilled to have a full slate of officers from our nominating committee to elect into service for the coming year or two. All members are welcome to vote in this meeting. Come to exercise the responsibilities of membership and encourage your new officers with your vote.
Pentecost also marks the end of another year of the narrative lectionary. The narrative lectionary is a four year cycle of readings that starts every fall with Genesis and works through several major stories in the Hebrew Scriptures, shifts to the prophets at Advent, and into the Gospel of the year (each Gospel gets a year) at Christmas. We stay in the Gospel until Easter and then shift to stories and letters from the early church. Last week we dipped into the letter of Galatians and we will have one more reading from Galatians in addition to a bit of the story of the first Pentecost this Sunday. In this week's reading from Galatians, we hear the list of the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, self-control.) The Spirit is in us and among us and we know this by these fruits. I invite you to prayerfully consider where or how you've seen any of these fruits through the ministry of St. A's at any time as you prepare for this service.
We will also celebrate Pentecost at Supper Church. Have you been curious about Supper Church? Why not take this special day to come see what it's all about? Please do RSVP so we're sure to have enough food.
We're also gearing up for our first workshop with AE Sloan Consulting. We are thankful that 23 people have agreed to serve (and more were willing, but had scheduling issues) on the leadership team who will participate in these workshops. Stay tuned for an invitation to a focus group in July!
Our third exchange student, Abigael, is leaving early Sunday morning. I'd like to do an in person coffee chat tomorrow at Maplewood Coffee and Tea to let folks say hello and goodbye to her (and also because it's sort of an anniversary spot for me!) I'll be at Maplewood between 10 and 12 tomorrow.
May the peace of Christ be with you,
Pastor Sarah |

PENTECOST SPECIAL OFFERING
The Pentecost Offering unites us in a church-wide effort to support young people and inspire them to share their faith, ideas, and unique gifts with the church and the world. Psalm 71 testifies that a foundation of faith established during childhood helps ensure lifelong faith and service. The patterns and lessons established during these formative years continue to bear fruit throughout a person's life. By receiving the Pentecost Offering, you are nurturing the faith of children, youth, and young adults. This offering is distributed as follows:
- 40% is retained by congregations to support work with at-risk children, youth and young adults in their local community.
- 50% supports ministries with youth and young adults.
- 10% supports child advocacy/children at risk.
Your Mission Team has decided to allot our 40% to Outside In, an organization that helps homeless youth and other marginalized people move towards improved health and self-sufficiency. Thank you for your continued generosity! |

CHANCEL FLOWERS IN GRATITUDE
Last week we were blessed by a beautiful orchid on the chancel. This flower was given by the Fowler family in gratitude for all the support following Greg's recent surgery. It happened to be displayed the day after Greg suddenly died so it was also a remembrance of the gift of his life and a reminder to us to hold Irene, Laura, Sean, and Jacob, and all in the families, in our prayers. |

CHRISTIAN FORMATION CORNER - MAY 2025
Dear brothers and sisters in faith: When I served on the St. Andrew’s staff (1990s-2009), I was encouraged and financially supported as I worked my way through the extensive PC(USA) Certified Christian Educator training. Now, as Elder of Christian Formation, I’d like to share a bit of what I’ve learned, with a brief message each month. Let’s meet an early REFORMER:
HULDRYCH ZWINGLI-Just the Basics. Huldrych Zwingli of Zurich (1484-1531) was the first Swiss theologian to become known as a “reformer.” He was Martin Luther’s contemporary and a well-established leader of the Reform movement by the time John Calvin came to Geneva. Zwingli stripped the cathedrals of all icons and developed the practice of the lectionary-preaching through the Bible every 3 years.
Let’s make learning a life-long journey!

NEXT STEPS IN ENNEAGRAM EXPLORATION
Join us on the fourth Saturday of the month, at 1:00pm on Zoom. We are reviewing various aspects of Enneagram theory.
There's a hunger in the group to learn more about wings. Pastor Sarah's invitation to you is to re-visit your favorite Enneagram resources and read the description of the types that are your wings or the type that you believe to be your strongest wing.
As you read, ask how is this pulling on me or shaping me or showing up in my life?
Curious about what all of this means? Join us and find out! |

MULTNOMAH SAFE REST VILLAGE NEWS
Some of you may have heard the murmurs that the City of Portland has decided to switch to a different organization to manage the Multnomah Safe Rest Village. We can now confirm that they intend to move away from Sunstone Way, who has managed this SRV since its inception, to Urban Alchemy, the organization who manages other, larger temporary housing sites in Portland. We unfortunately do not know what this means for the partnership between FMSRV and this Safe Rest Village, or whether or not they will welcome our supportive efforts to incorporate these temporarily housed neighbors into the wider community. We will find out when this switch takes place on July 1. In the meantime, please continue to sign up for Sandwich Mondays. This will continue until we are told to stop. We will keep you posted on further updates.
Here is a letter from Sunstone Way, responding to this change:
Hello everyone, we just wanted to update you on the status of MSRV. Unfortunately, we’ve now received final confirmation from the City that they intend to move forward with transitioning MSRV operations to a new provider, effective July 1st.
Despite pressure from the surrounding community, our staff, leadership, and Friends of MSRV, the City has not changed course. We are deeply disappointed with this outcome. We're sad for our participants, we're sad for our staff, and we're sad to lose so many wonderful connections in the community.
MSRV staff will support their participants with unwavering dedication and care until the very last hour on June 30th. We are also working hard to ensure that staff who want to move into our other programs will have jobs on July 1st.
Friends of MSRV have done so much for this program and it gives us peace of mind knowing that you are committed to continue supporting the site as best you can. We hope that the new provider will welcome your generosity and be good stewards of the neighborhood.
We want to thank everyone who has donated a meal, a bag of clothing, pet supplies, books, art & crafts, or simply just stopped by the gate with a friendly word. Your kindness does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
Thank you for welcoming us into your neighborhood. |

SERVING OUR NEIGHBORS AT WEST WOMEN'S & CHILDREN'S SHELTER FOR OVER 50 YEARS!
Our connection to WWCS goes back from the 1970’s to the 1990’s when the Windjammer Mariners, many of whom still worship here at St. Andrew’s, would deliver 5 gallons of milk every week for the women and children living at the shelter. More recently during the Covid pandemic, many members and friends of St. Andrew’s made and delivered casseroles, snacks, bread, and salads for the residents and the volunteers who serve them on the weekends when there are no paid kitchen staff. At times, other necessities such as hygiene items, children’s toys, and puzzles have been donated. For the last 13 years or more the residents of West Women and Children’s Shelter have been the recipients of our Giving Tree donations. 35 gifts were provided for Christmas 2024. On behalf of St. Andrew's the Mission Team continues to allocate an annual monetary gift to support the shelter.
Our current, ongoing ministry is continuing to deliver pre-made casseroles and other food and household items to the shelter on a monthly basis. Ask any of us who have made the deliveries and you will hear how grateful and joyful are the volunteers who meet us to accept our donations.
We would love your help. If you’d like to share in serving our neighbors at WWCS, check out the link here. Joy Abounds!

SOUTHWEST OUTREACH SHOWER PROGRAM
Southwest Outreach is an active civic group connecting with our neighbors living outside in SW Portland through visits, conversation, relationship-building, and a weekly shower program at Riversgate Church in Multnomah Village. The weekly shower program is a welcome day center for people being displaced in our area. Our guests find a few peaceful hours to get a shower and a hot meal, connect with resources and engage in conversation.
Request for electronic devices: Many of our neighbors who live outside desperately need electronic devices: phones, tablets, laptops, portable WiFi hotspots. This connects them to the world of housing, medical care, employment, emergency services and other resources. If you have a device in any condition that is usable or can be repaired, please contact Marilyn Palumbo. The device should be reset to factory status from the settings menu. We’ll help with that if needed! Thank you.
If you are interested in volunteering with this important and effective group, contact Sandy Steinecker or Marilyn Palumbo. You can also contact them if you’re worried about someone in the neighborhood who might be houseless and needing help. St. Andrew's is the fiscal sponsor of SW Outreach. You can make money donations through our website, choosing 'SW Outreach' in the drop-down menu. |

ZIPLOC MINISTRY
Saturday, June 7
10:30-12:00-Ziploc bag filling and donation drop-off
Each month St. Andrew's sends large Ziploc bags filled with essential items to our ministry partner Operation Nightwatch, who then distributes them to the houseless people who utilize their services. Thanks to generous donors, along with additional Neighborhood Ministries funds, we receive enough funding each month to cover these costs. We are grateful to be able to continue this important work.
So what can you do to help? It has been brought to our attention the constant need for donations of new socks and new men's boxer-briefs, for many of our ministry partners. These can be dropped off at our first Saturday Ziploc bag filling, at worship on Sundays, or during office hours.
